How Far is Too Far ?

When it comes to Roman Polanksi fighting against the media for invasion of privacy some may say that the media is performing its “watch-dog” function, while others say Polanksi has a right to privacy.

The Polish-French Oscar-winning director of movies such as Chinatown and Rosemary’s Baby had been under house arrest for statutory rape in the United States which he committed in 1977.

Upon being apprehended in the 70s for his crime he fled to France where he was not able to be contained by the U.S. Government. More than thirty years later, he was arrested by the Swiss Government and put under house arrest.

While he was serving his sentence, it was found that photos of himself and his family in their home were released to the public. Roman Polanski then preceded to sue the French Media for invasion of privacy.

Polanski Sues French Media

Although the French Media may have felt that they were monitoring a predator did the ends justify the means? I’m not sure they did. Regardless of the crime committed, it doesn’t make the paparazzi’s action excusable. The media would not be able to take photographs during a sentence at a prison facility so it should not have been okay to do that same at Polanski’s place of residents.

Polanski’s invasion of privacy suit names two French newspapers and two French magazines that ran photos of him and his family.

Not only did it cross the line of invading his privacy, but also crossed the line of the privacy of his family. Because both of his children are minors, they are protected under French media law. Polanski’s lawyer Marion Gregoire stated “The legal case against Polanski in no way justifies the paparazzi’s stalking of his wife and children.”

Polanski requested 150,000 Euros or $217,215 in damages. After the French court deliberated she decided to grant Polanski 16,000 Euros in privacy damages. It was stated that the pictures taken were part of a “media show” that had come at a “difficult time in the personal life of those concerned”. She continued to state that the photos were “neither necessary nor useful for legitimate public understanding”.

Reversing the DAMAGE

Over the course of the past few years Mel Gibson has but himself in compromising situations with the fault being his words. Whether its something too vulgar or offensive, he has shocked many of his fans and colleagues.

They’ve commented that Gibson had shown patterns of racism, sexism and anti-Semitism and called for a boycott of Gibson’s movies.

But in January of this year, according to Oksana Grigorieva, his longtime girlfriend and mother of their daughter; Gibson went further than words and became physical. After her allegations the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department launched a domestic violence investigation.

Oksana Grigorieva: Mel Gibson said he had ‘a dark side’

While in the midst of this investigation our Public Relations Firm finds that it is important to change the public’s opinion about our client Mr. Mel Gibson.

It is important for his future prospects as well as to this current investigation. If the judge can see that he’s changing, perhaps they will be more lenient.

It was our suggestion to have our client enter anger management, as well as counseling and educating him on effective ways to deal with his emotions. We plan on making this information known at the time of our press release.

Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America is another way we plan to turn around the public’s view of our client, as well as other avenues to show that he his views shown through his words were a misunderstanding.

In closing, we realize all these measures in and of themselves may not be the cure of antidote to the solution but Mr. Gibson welcomes outside input how to make himself a better person. A person that his fans remember as the actor they knew and loved.
Professional Standards Advisories

That was a brief overview of the public relations campaign that is in the works. In order to be one step ahead of the media as well as individuals targeting our client, we must think of ways in which our campaign strategies could backfire.

Perhaps the media and the public see him entering anger management and counseling as admittance to the allegations of Grigorieva being true. Which could possibly make him look even more guilty in the eyes of the public.

There are many different strategies and measures that could be taken, but ultimately our public relations team must make the best possible avenues to ensure our client positive publicity and change the public’s view of him.

Where’s Spalding ?

Many times I’ve heard older people and sometimes even my peers say they wish they could go back to when they were younger. In the movie17 Again Michael O’Donnell gets that opportunity. Mike is at the lowest point of his life.

He’s two weeks away from finalizing his divorce from his high school sweetheart and his nearly grown son and daughter want nothing to do with him. Not to mention, he’s also just been fired from his job of 16 years. Then something miraculous happens. He encounters a mysterious janitor at the high school where he experienced his “glory days” of basketball and wishes to do it all over again.

Mike, played by Matthew Perry is transformed into the attractive and young Zac Efron; his younger self. With the help of his rich best friend Ned, Mike gets the high school experience every teen dreams of. The best clothes, and the fastest car. Throughout the movie you find this journey of his is about a lot more than reliving his glory days.

Products disbursed throughout the movie included Xbox 360, Apple, Coca-Cola, Nutella and Audi just to name a few. If I wasn’t watching the movie specifically looking for these products I don’t think I would have consciously noticed that it was a form of advertising; they appeared in very natural situations. Whether Mike was driving down the street or making a sandwich.

Seeing as one of the central points of the film is basketball, Spalding had the opportunity to show their product frequently throughout the film. It may have been during flashbacks of when Mike was in high school playing, or when he and his unsuspecting son played as teammates in the present.

It may be pure coincidence that the basketballs are angled perfectly to see the brand every time they’re in the actors’ hands, but I doubt it. Another product that was placed particularly well throughout the movie were JanSport backpacks. Almost every student walking down the halls of Hayden High had the same brand bag.

These products were most likely chosen to be placed strategically in this movie because of the content. It’s a coming of age story with the setting in a public high school during basketball season. With hundreds of students walking through the hallways almost every other scene it would make it easy to place there brand throughout the movie. I feel that the product placement was very subliminal and effective.

A Journey Through The Looking Glass

As a child did were you told the story of Alice and Wonderland? Were you aware that it was a depreciated version of an actual story? When I read The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, I found there was so much more to the story.

The Looking Glass Wars Trilogy

The Looking Glass Wars is the first fictional novel of the trilogy by Frank Beddor, motivated by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Frank Beddor explains that Lewis Carroll encountered a young Alyss and that his works were a distortion of the ‘true events’ which she experienced, and had later forgotten. The novel has many twists and turns on the original story.

Beddor uses anagrams to relate the characters from Carroll’s story to his “biography” of Wonderland. For instance, the white rabbit is actually Alyss’s (Alice’s) tutor, Bibwit Harte, and the Mad Hatter is actually a very agile, sober bodyguard named Hatter Madigan. Opposites of the characters we grew up knowing.

I came across the first book of the series on a summer day at Arundel Mills with my family. My mom’s more a frugal shopper so I’ve picked up the habit of walking directly to the clearance section.

When we entered Books-A-Million, I randomly came across The Looking Glass Wars for 70% off. I read the inside flap of the book and it seemed pretty interesting; I didn’t know then it would become one of my favorite and most influencing reads.

As soon as I had finished the first few chapters, I knew I’d have to make a trip to get the next book in the series. I’m a big reader, and NEEDED to purchase Seeing Red before I finished the first book.

The book really connected my childhood and newly found adulthood. It was a bedtime fairy tale shifted into a fantastical reality. Which is what life is. Alyss realizes that the fairy tale she thought her life was, was not reality, and that she needed to take care of her responsibilities. I could really relate to that, as a child you dream of lollipop and rainbows and over the course of your life that vision changes over time.

Although the novel gave me that underlying message, there is still just a great story. It may express the reality that is hidden, but at the same time still shows hope, and remembrance of the dreams of a child. Not to mention, a cliff hanging story line.

This series can be enjoyed by people of any age. After I finished the first book I gave it to my 12 year old sister to read; she’s just as addicted to books as I am. Once she finished it, she gave it to my mom. So by the time I purchased the last book of the series ArchEnemy, my sister was reading the second book and my mom was reading the first. It brought all of us a little closer together.
